Automotive department helps give students some tools

Auto Mechanics often get a bad rap for inflating more than just tires. Southwestern Colleges venerable automotive department works to train mechanics on the road of ethics on a drive for integrity. SWC'S Automotive Department is offering 18 classes this semester.

Last semester students in San Ysidro had beautiful a new Southwestern College campus, a future of promise, but no books in the library. That was last semester. Now the bookcases are partly filled with encyclopedias, dictionaries and even some textbooks donated by SWC teachers.

Worldwide Best Buddies program comes to Southwestern

Southwestern College has a new buddy. For 20 years the Best Buddies program has partnered people with cognitive disabilities with peers who do not have disabilities. In 20 years it has grown to more than 400,000 members from 1,400 chapters in 22 states, and 43 countries.

Cathy McJannet has served as a Canadian Army nurse, jumped out of helicopters, prepped to rescue injured soldiers under fire and works as an ER nurse. Her toughest job ever, though, is running the SWC nursing program. As her military nursing background suggests, McJannet is a caring healer as well as one tough lady who expects a lot of herself and others.

Cesar Chavez inspired a life in the law

Not many Southwestern College professors have pictures of their former bosses hanging on their office walls like Victoria Lopez. Not many professors used to work for Cesar Chavez. Lopez, an ebullient professor of paralegal studies, is a lawyer, human rights advocate and former communications director for Chavez who worked closely with the iconic United Farm Workers founder.

Hate groups are on the rise

When the economy turns bad so do hate groups, organizations that condemn and persecute others based on their race, religion, sexual-orientation or culture. Hate groups in the United States have grown from 602 to 926 in the last nine years, including in generally-tolerant Southern California.
