Chopra's unilateral reorganization is the last straw, he must resign

Newspapers have played an indispensable role in the history of our nation. Many of our Founding Fathers were printers and journalists who had the courage to speak out against tyranny, intimidation and oppression. America's journalists - the only profession protected in the United States Constitution - shine spotlights on the good in our society and shine the penetrating light of truth under rocks to expose corruption, dishonesty and evil.

Parking lots are not accessible to disabled

Parking Lot "O" is Southwestern College's most visible as it opens out onto Otay Lakes Road. It is, however, SWC's least accessible for students with disabilities. Lot "O" does not have ramp access for students in wheelchairs. Disabled students who try to go to the top level of the school may find difficulties.

American industries are grappling with cost containment, layoffs and hiring freezes during the economic crisis gripping our nation and global economies. It should be no surprise, then, that Southwestern College Governing Board members voted to lay off five employees, leave open vacant positions and restructure overlapping positions.

Studying abroad can be a powerful experience. Southwestern College's Center for International Studies Program (CISP) encourages students to study abroad regardless of their economic situation.

Students left in the dust as MTS cuts service and raises its prices

A quarter may not seem like much, but these days every cent counts. Metropolitan Transit System officials must have had this in mind when they raised the fare for a one-way trip from $2 to $2.25 and stopped allowing transfers. Now each bus requires a separate fare.

Condesed calendar will better serve transferring students, cut expenses

Time is the most precious commodity of all, and Southwestern College has an opportunity to help students get through classes quicker and into universities earlier. It is time for SWC to join other universities and local community colleges in a 16-week calendar.

To save money on paper in our economic crisis Southwestern College should go green. Students and teachers should look into replacing textbooks with e-books, digitized books available to download online. These days most people get their news online, which seems to be the wave of the future.
