Southwestern College faculty met together for a glamorous night to recognize colleagues who have excelled in their profession. The Bonita Golf Club all-purpose room was transformed into an exquisite banquet hall with members of the faculty, dressed in their finest for the affair.
Following a brilliant performance of West African drums and dance performed by SWC students coordinated by Professor of Music Todd Cachetta, Academic Senate President-elect Angelina Stuart played hostess and announcer of the 2010 outstanding faculty award winners.
Receiving the outstanding Adjunct Faculty Award was English instructor Henry Aronson. Known for his dedication to students, Aronson was recognized for his ability to bring out and fortify the potential in aspiring writers.
"To be singled out for doing something that I love doing is truly an honor," he said.
For Teaching Excellence the honor went to Professor of Chemistry Jackie Thomas. With 30 years of experience, Thomas was acknowledged for her teaching proficiency inside and outside the classroom. She propels her students toward success by participating in workshops and outreach programs.
Professor of Journalism Max Branscomb received the Professional Leadership Award for his dedication to his students and the college as an instructor and mentor.
Branscomb has spent 14 years as the advisor for the national award-winning college newspaper, The Southwestern Sun.
His merits were further exemplified by his absence from the night's festivities. He and 12 of his journalism staff were away on a campus tour to California State University Chico where his students were offered scholarships.
"Max is a close friend of mine," said Academic President Valerie Goodwin-Colbert. "He truly deserves this award."
Also announced were the 2010 retirees which include librarian Mark Hammond, exercise science professors William Kinney and Arthur Stone, Professor of English Meredith Morton, and counselor T.J. Tate.
Among those present at the ceremony were former SWC Superintendent Norma Hernandez, past SWC Governing Board Member Maria Perman, former Mayor of Chula Vista Tim Nader and former State Senator Howard Wayne.
