For 34 years students have learned the basics and had fun

Strikes are bad in baseball, labor relations and any time lightning is involved, but if you are a bowler they are sublime.

Art Stone has been teaching the bowling class for Southwestern College how to make plenty of them. For 34 years the ageless wonder has been on a roll, changing lanes, striking out and talking turkey and he still loves it.

"It's an opportunity for me to teach the class and get to bowl, too," said Stone.

Bowlers strive for perfection like saints, but are rarely beautified.

Stone finally saw a perfect game the first in his class, last semester. But even on a less-than-perfect day, bowling is fun.

"When a student is studying all day and going between studying, working and making a living, this is a release," said Stone.

"It sure is," added Terry Gretz, a student who is majoring in animal health technology.

"This is the most attended class at SWC," said Stone, fully aware that the class is not even on the campus.

"It's better than being at a desk all day," said Eliza Cuevas, who is majoring in business and marketing.

Stone said it would be nice to have a bowling team at SWC, but with the budget problem it looks like there won't be one in the "foreseeable future."

This one-unit class costs $92.50 for the semester, plus the cost of the shoes and equipment. The class meets every Monday from 2 p.m. to 4:50 p.m.
